Greetings from Mexico, I hope that you had a wonderful month of July. This past month we had a wonderful time with our family and ministry, and in this monthly update I want to tell you all about it. Just last month we celebrated our 24th year anniversary of the church and Sarah and I also celebrated our 29th year wedding anniversary! It is crazy to think that we have spent over 80% of our married life here in the mission field of Mexico, but to be honest we wouldn’t have it any other way. And many of you, our precious ministry partners have been with us every step of the way! THANK YOU!
To celebrate our anniversary this year, Sarah and I took a trip to historic Puebla Mexico. Puebla is the state next to Mexico City in South Central Mexico, and this is where much of the most famous history of Mexico took place! This old city is full of foreign castles, traditional foods, and the location where many of Mexico’s most famous and important battles have been fought!
Puebla City (the capital) is also packed full of Catholic Cathedrals. These ancient giant churches are beautifully decorated and they are among the oldest remaining buildings in all of Mexico. As Sarah and I visited these historic sites, we saw that many of these churches were built in the early 1500’s by the Spaniards.
Sarah and I had a wonderful time exploring the ancient city, and because it isn’t a fancy tourist destination and there aren’t any beaches, we were the only American tourists to be seen. (Just the way we like it!) Together we enjoyed exploring the thousand-year-old Mayan ruins, and we climbed the world’s largest (by volume) pyramid! This city rests at over 7000 feet of elevation, so at the end of each day we felt wiped out after reaching our daily fitness goal of 15,000 or more steps. (Full disclosure? Sarah did much better in her walking than I did!)
There was another important reason we picked this historic city of over 1 million people to visit for our anniversary. That is because we are going to plant a church in Puebla next year! As we walked the streets of this great city, one thing that broke my heart is that I never saw one Christian church. That was a clear reminder that this is the perfect place to plant a bible-teaching, Spirit-filled church. Please keep our future church plant in Puebla in your prayers!
On the church side of things, at the end of July we had our annual Summer Beach Baptism! Every year our entire church looks forward to this great event, and this summer’s baptisms did not disappoint. We had over forty new believers baptized this year, and almost all of them had come to the Christian faith in the past month or two.
We had four groups of pastors baptizing these believers. And as I looked around I had a flashback as I remembered the old pictures of how Pastor Chuck Smith of the original Calvary Chapel used to regularly baptize new believers in Pirate’s Cove in California back in the 60s and 70s. Thank you Lord Jesus for letting us follow in these great footsteps, and for reminding us that the Jesus Movement isn’t done, but continues to this day!
The day we did the baptisms the waves were really big, and during one of my baptisms, I stumbled into the water and got totally dunked! Unfortunately I was wearing my prescription glasses with me during the baptism (my only good pair) and I lost them in the waves! Ultimately, my personal baptism gave everyone a good laugh because my friend caught the whole thing on video! (You can check out the video on my facebook or Instagram page!) But on a serious note, reflecting back on losing my glasses was all worth it, because each and every one of these new believers is precious in the Lord’s sight!
As we move into August we are preparing for our annual church planting conference. This is the 12th year our church has hosted this amazing event, and I am believing by faith that this year’s conference will be our best one yet. We have over 600 friends that have registered already online, and we have a fantastic lineup of pastors and workshop leaders ready to teach and equip the many pastors and leaders interested in learning more about church planting!
Finally, I want to thank you once again for your partnership with our family here in the ripe mission fields of Mexico. It is through your prayers that God meet’s our spiritual needs, and through your financial partnership that God meet’s our physical needs. We feel blessed and honored to serve as your missionaries.
