Brechtel Update - August 2026
Hello friends and family!
We just wanted to take a moment to give you an update about all that the Lord is doing in our lives at this time. As a lot of you know, after being in the mission field for 9 ½ years (after much prayer), the Lord has made it evident to us that it is time to return to the United States. We are now in the process of handing over the church to my assistant pastor, Mauricio. Please be in prayer for this process because it has not been easy for us. God has established a healthy church, and our prayer is that it would continue to be a fruitful church.
Oaxaca has been our home, and it is very hard to say goodbye. We really thought that we would stay here for the rest of our lives, but the Lord has changed our plans. One thing we want everyone to understand is that we are NOT leaving under bad circumstances, but we are leaving under God’s guidance and direction.
One main reason for coming back is that Jonny and Noah are at an age where they have to start finding a career path, something that would be hard for them to do here in Mexico. Options for them here are very limited. Allison and I feel a strong responsibility as parents to help them get established in a culture they had left behind when they were children. They are adults at this point and have never given us any trouble as parents, but we feel the need to be there for some form of accountability until they are a little better established. We also ask that you would be praying for them, because they are working at a Christian camp in Crestline.
Allison and I are still in Oaxaca until things are finished up here. The church is doing well and has been moving slowly in this time of transition. The church knows, and a few weeks ago I ordained Pastor Mauricio as head pastor. We are not leaving yet because there is still a lot to do.
I want to ask and remind everyone to please not stop supporting us yet, because there is a lot that still needs to happen. Our support has gone down because a lot of people know that we are coming back. A lot of our support goes to help the church pay rent because it is not a hundred percent self-supported. We are in the process of making some cuts to make it a little more sustainable. We also need to be able to get back to California with all our belongings and have time to find a job and place to live after we arrive.
Saving Grace World Missions gives us a period to get reestablished. We hope to use as little of our funding as possible in order to use the rest to help pay some of the rent for the church for as long as possible. We would like to leave a good amount for them. This will depend on the generosity of our supporters. We do not like to talk about money, and for these for the last 9 ½ years, we have rarely asked for money because of your generosity.
Allison and I are so grateful to every one of you who have supported us so faithfully over the years. Your love, prayers, and friendships have made it possible to plant this church, and people’s lives have been greatly impacted because of what the Lord has done through you. You have truly gone with us on this venture of faith.
We love you all and are so grateful for each and every one of you! May the Lord bless you!
- Jon and Allison
