God’s Mountain
Hello Friends and Family,
I am at the end of the fifth week of this journey that the Lord has led me on—learning not only the real purpose of the Church, but also the seriousness of making disciples and being sent to the unreached.
What does “unreached people” mean?
It means all those who have never heard about Jesus or have had the opportunity to receive the Gospel because of culture, language barriers, poverty, political instability or lack of concern for lost souls.
I’m sharing my heart with those of you who are partnering with me in prayer and financial support. I want you to experience, as much as possible, what I have experienced in the calling of my life to serve the Lord-those of us who love the Lord have all been called in some capacity—and I thank you for your support.
Week in Mazatlán
We flew to Mazatlán and stayed at Calvary Maranatha. And although it was extremely hot and humid, and our accommodations were sleeping on the floor at the church, God met us in incredible ways and our time there was a tremendous blessing. We were so blessed to be involved in planning and attending several events. There were four days of special outreaches for children. We hosted an exciting space themed VBS and a 3 day soccer tournament for both the church and the community. It drew many people to the event, and these young children were exposed to the love of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The families there were so warm and inviting.
Journey to the Mountains
After Mazatlán, it was time to pack up and leave. We had a six-hour drive ahead of us into the San Gregorio mountains to reach a town called Nayarit home to the Cora people, an indigenous group from northwest Mexico. This colorful indigenous tribe still live in very primitive conditions.
We camped for four days. Many beautiful children were all around us. I must say—it was rough: sleeping on the hard ground, walking in pitch darkness to use the toilet, and torrents of rain pouring down on a steel roof as we laid on cement. We had two blankets, no running water, and no bathing facilities—but it was all worth the experience. This is the way of life for many people in these mountains.
Oh, the Lord was our joy in the morning! When the children surrounded our sleeping area walls, just waiting to see us with their happy faces—it made everything worth it. We played games, painted faces, and set up tables with (I believe) 800 pairs of shoes for villagers to take as needed.
We also set up a medical camp inside our tent where mothers and children came to receive medications and diagnoses. Two sisters in the medical field served two long days, donating their time and resources to assist those in need. The love of God was poured out upon this isolated tribe and we were used by God to share the message that the creator of the world has not forgotten them, He knows them and loves them, that’s why He sent us to them!
A Personal Testimony
We journeyed on a narrow, treacherous mountain path after the rain—anywhere from 2,300 to 3,400 feet in elevation—to visit one family. Of coarse, I volunteered to go. The purpose was to introduce us to a husband-and-wife missionary couple who are part of this indigenous Cora tribe and can share the Gospel with them in their native language. As we walked I was experiencing Psalm 19:1, The heavens declare the glory of God. It was beautiful. Untouched creation.
I made this journey on my 75th birthday. I don’t think anyone believed I could do it—but God said go, and I went. And as I was surrounded by all this perfect creation, all I could think of was the Garden of Eden, and what the paradise earth looked like, and the spirit of God blowing through the trees. It was beautiful to imagine.
I must say I was tired coming back, but it was quite an achievement.
I will never forget!
I am hoping you are enjoying these newsletters—not just because of the need for support and partnership—but so this work can continue to move forward.
I take this call very seriously. One day, I will have to account to God for what I have done.
I love how the Lord refers to us as a body with many parts—some stay back and pray, some partner and give, and others are sent out. Thank you for doing your part in this call to missions. We are all called by God to fulfill the Great Commission and make disciples of all nations.
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” – Isaiah 6:8
With love and gratitude,
