A New Era of Missions: Reaching the “Air-Conditioned Unreached”
Mention “Unreached People Groups,” around most missionaries and mission-minded churches, and the image of a missionary wearing a pith helmet, with a Bible in one hand, and a machete in the other hand, slashing his way through a remote jungle comes to mind. When I arrived in Cambodia in 2000, this era was already coming to an end and it is transitioning to a new era of missions, which I call, “Air-Conditioned Unreached.”
I remember sitting in mission conferences hearing about how “meeting felt needs” (food, clothing, healthcare, shelter, and education) was essential to earning the opportunity to share the Gospel. Now, in 2026, there still are genuinely poor people in Cambodia, but also just two streets from my house, is a house that has multiple luxury cars, including a Lamborghini and a MacClaren sitting side by side in the garage. This family still needs the same Gospel and Salvation as the urban poor who live on top of graves or in garbage dumps, but their physical needs are more than met, because their net-worth is probably more than 50 times my own. They still need the same Gospel and they probably do not need food or free English lessons.
Looking at the Biblical data, we often overlook that both Jesus and Paul shared the Gospel with the poor and rich alike. Jesus was supported by wealthy women and Lydia, a successful businesswoman was the first domino that led to the Gospel spreading to Europe and beyond.
This is why it is even more important to equip, empower, and encourage national Christians to reach their own nations (Cambodians evangelizing Cambodians etc). This way the Gospel can go to people that we will never meet (until heaven) in places we will never go, and in languages we will never speak. But, God is not limited by our limitations, He can empower us, to equip and encourage others to reach even the “air-conditioned unreached” who live in complete physical comfort behind security gates but still will remain empty and on the path to eternal destruction, without Christ.
Phones as Tracts and Training Platforms that We Usually Have With Us
In previous posts/emails, I have shared about how I found an evangelism outline (Answers to Difficult Questions) that I made in 2001 to share my faith with my Buddhist students, but had forgotten and lost for 20 years, with versions in English, Cambodian, Spanish, and Japanese.
About a month ago, I woke up one morning with this inspiration to reformat this resource from needing to be viewed on a computer screen or printed but instead easily viewable on vertical phone screens without zooming because nowadays, especially in Cambodia almost everyone has a phone but fewer people have access to computers or printers. Printed materials, including tracts, are expensive, and we may forget them at home, but it’s very unlikely that we will forget our phones.
Answers to Life’s Most Important Questions expands on the 2001 resource by adding additional encouragement for new believers such as to find a local church, get baptized, and multiply/share their faith. When I started this project, I was just intending to share it to my international church’s men’s ministry and a few others. I shared it with the Men’s Ministry and one brother wants to translate it and other resources into Chinese. Another brother is interested in making a version for Muslims in Urdu (Pakistani).
Cambodian and Spanish are in process as well and some other languages of India may also be possible. Here’s just a couple divine appointments:
I lost contact with my Cambodian translator, Pastor Dara (he used to translate my video scripts) for nearly two years because his wife had a baby and health problems and he changed his phone number. About three weeks ago, I met him unexpectedly at the international church and he agreed to help me with the Cambodian version.
In college, I minored in Spanish (even though it drug down my GPA). I often felt like it was a wasted skill because God sent me to Cambodia. In 2002, I met the first missionary family from a Spanish speaking country (Pastor Nicolas). They didn’t speak English and hadn’t learned Cambodian yet. Because of my Spanish, we became friends. I ended up working with Pastor Nicolas to make a Spanish-Cambodian version to serve as a language-learning bridge and evangelism tool back then.
This family continues to be missionaries in rural Cambodian and have paved the way for many other Spanish speaking missionaries. Their son and his family are now missionaries too. Anyway, I was just thinking about making an updated Spanish version of this new resource but I couldn’t find a native speaker to check it. Last week, Kayo and I went to a nearby mall to shop for groceries. We met this very same family! We hadn’t seen each other since before Covid. They are willing to to help with the updated Spanish version. This week I plan to prepare and send the files to them as well.

A few days later, while I was at the gym, I felt an urge to send the phone “tract” as an e-mail attachment to my oldest brother. He told me that it should be available globally and offered to sponsor a website. From somewhere between 2013 and 2023 I had a website www.internationalfishers.com but I shut it down for various reasons including finances and discouragement. One morning before school, I asked Benjamin, what web address I should get on the new website. He encouraged me to try to get my old www.internationalfishers.com address again. It was still available after at least three years! Despite some tech issues, the homepage is online. I will add more resources as I am able.
I will also be teaching a Christology class at Cambodia Bible Institute in October. I also was able to revise the student booklet (since there isn’t a suitable book available, I compiled my own) and exam.
Kayo and her International Church’s Women’s Ministry
Kayo continues to minister to women from Cambodia and more than 35 other nations through Precious Women Organization (which retrains and evangelizes often exploited Cambodian women who work in nightclubs etc.) and by founding and leading the international church’s women’s ministry. She trains and equips these women through intensive Bible studies, mentoring, and in-person/online counseling/encouragmenent. There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that she does to minister to these women that few people ever see.
