Jungle Pastor Travels Miles to Share Jesus! (Jungle Ministry Part 2)

Pastor Alfredo

“You studied the Bible so that our people could know God and His word,” Teolinda said to her husband, Alfredo. Convicted by what Jesus had called him to do from the beginning, Alfredo stopped working in the busy city and began a church in his home community of San Rafael. He is now planning to build a discipleship/training center in his hometown so that many pastors can be raised up in the jungle!

Land we helped start to clean and prep for the training center!

In the previous update, I shared how powerful a simple moment with a precious soul can be in the hands of our amazing God. But, what happens when those moments pass? What happens when the short term mission trip is over? What is left when we are gone? We see that God’s design is not to leave people after one short visit, but to leave them with pastors, elders, and churches to grow them in their faith. Our team to the jungle had the blessing of seeing the beginnings of such a move of God.

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you

Titus 1:5

Pastor Alfredo is the leader in the community of San Rafael, which is like a farm in the states: distant, but familiar and cozy. He went to a training center in a city so that he could come back and feed his people the word of God; but after studying he took a job in that city. While working, his wife exhorted him that this was not what God had originally called him to do. He headed back home and began the church that we were able to partner with when we visited.

Alfredo is a very well-respected leader among his town and surrounding villages throughout the jungle. Let me paint a picture of how Alfredo and his wife are being faithful to take Jesus to new places. A few months ago, the team from Calvary Trujillo came and taught an Inductive Bible Study course (Inductive Bible Study is a method that helps you rightly interpret and teach what scripture says and means). Alfredo, in three short months, has now taken that method and taught it to multiple villages in the jungle! Him and his wife endure long journeys, sleeping on floors, and miles of walking to get to these places and share Jesus!

Me and the guys with Henry (Middle)

While in San Rafael, we bonded strongly with a young twenty-two year old man named Henry. Henry is a sensitive and beautiful soul. Nearly every time we prayed or sang together you could hear him weeping from the deep contentment that he has in Jesus. He had walked for nearly a full day from his home village to be with us that week. He sang songs for us in the Aents’ (Henry and Alfredo’s people group) language and spent valuable time with us. Henry is training to be a pastor, please pray that he would grow in his faith.

North of this area, there are about 15 different people groups in Peru until you hit Ecuador. 11 of those are considered unreached with the gospel (they have no access to hear about Jesus). Although we have an awesome connection with Alfredo in San Rafael, it’s currently not the same way in the populated capital, Moyobamba. The vision of Calvary Trujillo is to soon plant a church in Moyobamba that can send out laborers into these unreached parts of the jungle. On our trip, we spent a couple days praying over the city, talking to people, and understanding the spiritual climate.

Team in Moyobamba

While looking at the work in San Rafael and the potential in Moyobamba, I couldn’t help but feel as though I was seeing the beginning of a marvelous move of God. These ministries have the potential to reach the last parts of Peru that do not have the gospel. How exciting to see the beginnings of something new. Moyobamba and the cities beyond need the love of Jesus to transform their lives. Would you pray with me for Jesus to grow this new work He is beginning in the jungle?

For His Eternal Kingdom,
Adam Fulmizi
