Greece Needs the Love of Christ

A New Season

by kspence2627 on April 26, 2012

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” -Isaiah 30:21

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Sorry that there was no update last month. We have been taking time to fast and pray over some things that God placed on my heart, and we wanted to wait until we had a clear answer from Him to pass onto you.

We have been in Greece for a little over a year and I felt a strong stirring in my spirit that God wanted me to take time to earnestly seek Him and pray about what He wants us to be doing here. Over the last few months my heart has been stirred more and more towards evangelism and discipleship. I feel that God has also given me a vision of how to practically address what is on my heart by serving alongside Greeks and ministries that have experience in these specific areas.

Because I feel like I need to focus more specifically on the vision that God has given me, at this time I believe that we are called to transition out of the church plant that we have been working with since we arrived. This isn’t an easy thing to do, but I feel like God has asked us to break out of our comfort zone, and be willing to see His will for our family and for me individually in all of this.

We are still praying for and wanting to support Frank and Suzie and their ministry. We love them very much and look forward to all God will accomplish through them as willing vessels of His grace and mercy. Please continue to pray for Frank, Suzie, and the brothers and sisters that attend the bible study.

I am still praying through this season of change in our lives (in more ways than one with our third child due late July), but I am confident that the Lord has a plan for us in all of this. I have been approached with several different opportunities and we are praying about which Greek church should be our home church. I will be going around talking to several different pastors and ministries to see if there are any that need help that would be a natural fit for our family and my specific calling. Our goal right now is simply to serve along side of Greeks, observing culture and practicing language while allowing God to shape us and teach us His plan for ministering to the hurting people in this country. The Lord is continuing our training but we must be humble and take a step back and obey His will for our lives.

Please continue to pray for us, and thank you for your love and support.

In Him,

Travis Spencer and family

Prayer Requests

1. Please pray for us during this time of transition, that God would make it clear what organizations He wants us to work along side of and which Greek church should be our home church.

2. For continued strength and good health. Specifically that I would not have any UC flare ups, that Kristin and the baby would continue to do well throughout the last trimester of her pregnancy, and that none of us would catch the flu that is going around right now

3. Provision to go back to the US to apply for visas after the baby’s birth.

4. Enrolling Ksena in public school for the upcoming year, we will have to turn everything in sometime in May or June.

5. Continued diligence in language study and wisdom from the Lord about the Greek culture.

6. Grace and mercy through all of the adjustments we are making in ministry and as we prepare to welcome a 5th member into our family at the end of July.

7. That God would continue to touch our hearts and burden us for the lost souls that need the salvation of Jesus Christ in this city and country, and for all of the Greek people that are being evicted from their homes, losing their jobs, and struggling to be able to afford food for their families.

February Update 2012

by kspence2627 on February 29, 2012

First off I wanted to do a praise report. Thank you for praying that my new medication would work. It can be difficult to switch to a different formula, but my Greek Ulcerative Colitis medicine seems to be working well now.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers. We have gotten a lot of emails and messages asking us about the unrest in Greece lately, especially in Athens. If you look at the media, it looks like a bunch of unruly Greeks trashing the city, but in actuality, most if not all of the damage is done by extremist groups that take advantage of people that want to peacefully protest by turning the protest into a riot. Greek people would not tear down and burn their own businesses. Even in desperate economic times, that simply does not make sense. The austerity measures that the EU is asking for are very extreme, and many people will not be able to afford food for their families soon, so please pray for this nation. As it is right now, most people are already living off of their savings, and soon that will be gone. I was reading an article that up to 64,000 people will be paid nothing for working this month because of retroactive taxes, and some may even owe the government at the months end. This simply does not make sense, and actions like this are not going to solve Greece’s financial crisis. But above all, the people of this nation need Jesus Christ, so please continue to pray that God would use our small group mightily during this time.

The bible study on Tuesday nights is going well. Frank is teaching the book of John, and there are so many lessons we can learn from the way Jesus lived His life! The last two weeks we have had a new family come, so that has been exciting. I am also going to have an opportunity to start discipling a teenager that Kristin has been tutoring in English the last few months. I talked with his father (a believer that attends Tuesday night studies), and he said that if the young man likes being discipled, we can make it a weekly meeting. He is 16 years old, and our whole family loves him. He is already exhibiting all of the fruits of a brother, and we see the need for him to be taught the bible in a more one on one way. Please pray that the first few meetings would go well, and his thirst for the word of God would increase daily.

On the home front in California, Kristin’s dad, Brian, will be having arthroscopic heart surgery to repair a leaking mitrovalve on March 16th. Originally the doctors thought he would also need to have a stint put into his aorta, but after a barrage of tests, they have determined that besides the leaky valve, his heart is in really healthy shape. Please pray for him, and for our family, as this is still a somewhat dangerous surgery, and it is hard for us to be away from him during all of this.

We are still praying for God to provide for all of our needs to go back to California after the birth of our son to apply for new visas, and also to get some things done that we have been putting off. One of the big things that needs to happen is I need to have oral surgery to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed. My dentist told me that they were most likely impacted two years ago, but we ran out of time to schedule the surgery before we left for Hungary in November, 2010. Please pray that God would provide for us to pay for this procedure, and also keep my teeth from getting worse in the meantime.

Kristin’s pregnancy is going well. She is having some back problems related to an injury that happened during her last pregnancy, but the baby and everything else are fine. Please pray that God would continue to help her with her daily activities through the back pain, and that He would keep her blood pressure normal, as high blood pressure has been an issue during her last two pregnancies.

We are anticipating leaving to go to California in the middle of August, depending on the baby’s arrival time and the paper work we have to do get his passport. This means we will have to buy airline tickets last minute, so pray God would work all of that out. We also want to make ourselves available to speak at different churches, home fellowships, or men’s and women’s groups about what God is doing in Greece. So please feel free to contact us (spencers.abroad@gmail.com) if you are interested in having us come and share.

Thank you for all of your prayers and encouraging notes. We appreciate them so much, and we really appreciate you back home, interceding for the work here in your prayers.

In His everlasting love,

Travis, Kristin, Ksena, Katienne, and Baby Boy Spencer

Prayer Requests:

1. For Kristin’s dad’s upcoming heart surgery. That Brian would have a successful surgery to repair his mitrovalve and that he would have a quick recovery.

2. Kristin’s pregnancy. For her and the baby to be healthy. For the baby to develop correctly, and the birth coming towards the end of the summer.

3. Travis’ opportunity to disciple a young man we know, and that God would continue to grow the Tuesday night studies in His timing.

4. Furlough details, visa paperwork, provision for both.

5. The nation of Greece to recognize their need for a loving Savior who wants to have a personal relationship with them.

January 2012

by kspence2627 on January 27, 2012

I think we should start out this newsletter by saying Happy New Years! We are so excited to see all that God will do in 2012.

The first thing we ask you to do is pray for Kristin’s father, Brian. We found out today that he is in the hospital undergoing tests to see when he will have heart surgery. Before he came to visit us for Christmas, he had an echo cardiogram done as a routine check up after some minor problems he had a year ago. When he got home his doctor said it looked like there was a leak in his mitro valve in the left ventricle. Two weeks ago he had an angiogram and he was still waiting to talk to his doctor about the results until he went in to the hospital today. It is very likely they will do open heart surgery soon, and they will also be placing a stint in his aorta because it is enlarged. We have recently seen a huge change in him as he recommitted his life to the Lord several months ago, and he is trusting the Lord in all of this. Please pray that God would be with him and give the doctors wisdom. Please also pray for Kristin, as it is very difficult for her to be away from him during all of this.

We also got some big news last Friday at Kristin’s OB appointment, and that is we will be having a little boy! We still haven’t picked out a name yet, but we are very excited about this little addition to our family.

And speaking about the newest edition, we have been praying and seeking the Lord on how we should approach getting this little guy a visa. Very recently, Greece started offering visas for Volunteers. Prior to that they were only offering Independently Wealthy Visas, and we weren’t sure we would be able to qualify for that. Since we will have to get a new visa for this little one anyway, we are planning on making a trip back to the US to apply for the new Volunteer visa. We need to find an organization that will sponsor our visa in Greece, and also a second organization in the US (this basically means that both have to give a reason why we would be living and volunteering in Greece). Please pray that God would give us the right connections and relationships in order to get everything together to be able to apply. We are planning on returning around early September and leaving again around October or November. During our trip we are also praying about having the opportunity to go from California to Colorado to visit family that lives there.

In the last few months we have seen our monthly support drop off a bit. We are trusting the Lord in this area and have been praying and feel that the Lord is telling us to let our needs be known to the body of Christ. We are currently praying for more monthly supporters to co-labor along with us so we can financially afford to stay ministering in Greece. For more information, or if you want to pass on our info to a person or church that might be interested in supporting our family, please check out the PDF on our website.

We also added two new pages to our blog to help people understand what it is we do as missionaries on a day to day basis, and what the religious climate is like in Greece. You can check out these new sections on http://sgwm.com/spencer titled, “Life in Greece,” and “Religious Climate.”

Prayer Requests:

-Brian’s health and that the doctors would have wisdom on how to move forward with his heart condition.

-Health for Kristin and the baby boy she is carrying.

-Provision for our daily needs through more monthly supporters.

-Provision for airfare, visas, and other miscellaneous costs associated with furlough.

-Greece as a country as the government struggles to deal with the financial crisis.

-For the hearts of Greek people to be open to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38

May the Lord bless you,

Travis, Kristin, Ksena, Katienne, and Baby Boy Spencer
