Albania & Kuwait

Albania: is located in Eastern Europe across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. It is north of Greece, west of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and south of Montenegro and Kosovo and is almost 80% Muslim. During the communist rule of Albania, all religion was viewed as a threat. The campaign against religion peaked in the 1960s. Beginning in 1967 the Albanian authorities began a violent campaign to try to eliminate religious life in Albania. All churches, mosques, monasteries, and other religious institutions were either closed down or converted into warehouses, gymnasiums, or workshops by the end of 1967. By May 1967, religious institutions had been forced to relinquish all 2,169 churches, mosques, cloisters, and shrines in Albania, many of which were converted into cultural centers for young people. As the literary monthly Nendori reported the event, the youth had thus “created the first atheist nation in the world.”. Today the Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. According to the Albanian Constitution, there is no official religion and all religions are equal; however, the predominant religious communities (Bektashi, Sunni Muslim, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians) enjoy a greater degree of official recognition (e.g., national holidays) and social status based on their historical presence in the country.

Kuwait: is situated in Southwest Asia, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait is 95% Muslim and 5% Christian, Hindu, and Parsi. The constitution provides for freedom of religion but places some limits on religious practice. Most Christians are foreign workers and are free to meet informally for worship. However, religious minorities experience some discrimination as a result of governmental policies. Non-Muslims find it difficult to obtain legal permission to establish new places of worship and the evangelization of Muslims is prohibited.

Prayer Points:

1. Please pray for Albania that God would soften the hearts of the people to the gospel. Pray also that God would send more missionaries to share the gospel message. Pray that the people would have a hunger for God.
2. Pray for those who are afraid of persecution to stand strong for the gospel and share with those around them.
3. Pray that the authorities would allow the Jesusfilm and other media to be broadcasted on public TV, radio and websites.
4. Pray for the foreign believer’s in Kuwait that they would be strong in their faith and be willing to share the gospel with those around them.
5. Pray that God would raise up more missionaries who have a heart to go to Kuwait.
6. Pray for those who are wrongfully persecuted, that would find strength and encouragement as they stand strong for the gospel.
