Kyrgyzstan & Turkmenistan

Kyrgyzstan: is located in central Asia, landlocked and mountainous, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and People’s Republic of China to the east.  The Constitution and the law provide for freedom of religion in Kyrgyzstan, and the Government generally respected this right in practice; however, the Government restricted the activities of radical Islamic groups that it considered threats to stability and security and hampered or refused the registration of some Christian churches. Although most religious groups and sects operated with little interference from the Government or each other, there were several cases of societal abuse based on religious beliefs and practices. A mob upset at a Baptist pastor’s conversions of Muslims to Christianity publicly beat the pastor and burned his Bibles and religious literature.

Turkmenistan: is 89% Muslim. Freedom of religion is guaranteed by article 11 of the Constitution of Turkmenistan. However, like other human rights, in practice it does not exist. Former President Saparmurat Niyazov’s book of spiritual writings, the Ruhnama, is imposed on all religious communities. Christian literature is confiscated and believers interrogated, threatened and fined by police. They risk losing their homes, their jobs or being sentenced to jail, labor camp or psychiatric hospital. Their children may face expulsion from school. Some Christian leaders have to attend the local police station every week for a ‘chat’.

Prayer Points:

1. Please pray for the believers in Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.  Pray that through persecution that their faith would become stronger and many more would place their faith in God.
2. Pray for the people who have been wrongfully imprisoned, beaten, bibles burned, etc due to their faith.  Pray that because of these events that more bibles would get distributed and the gospel would spread.
3. Pray for more missionaries to go to these countries in spit of risk of imprisonment and other risks they could face.
4. Pray that God would raise up these nations to be light’s in the darkness and many people would come to know Jesus.
5. Pray that the government would allow the showing of the Jesus film and other media through out the country.
