The Kanyike Update–July 2016

Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.  Hebrews 10:24-25

Dear Friends and Family,

The past month has been busy in a blessed way! It was a very full schedule as we had a team visiting us from Black Canyon Calvary Chapel (Black Canyon City, AZ). Most of the events centered on ministry to women. We want to thank everyone of you who contributed toward making these events possible, your contributions have blessed so many people.

We had our first women’s retreat for Arise Christian Fellowship

We had our first women’s retreat for Arise CWomens Retreathristian Fellowship.  The theme was “When the Lord Speaks” and our guest speaker was Margaret Opsal from BCC. We really had an amazing time. We had 30 ladies come—most of them from our women’s Bible study but we also included some missionaries from western Uganda and some ladies from a church near to the Bible College where I teach.

The conference center was on a peninsula so it was a peaceful setting surrounded by water.  I believe many of the ladies, especially those from Kampala, took advantage of being in such a beautiful, quiet setting to wait upon and listen for the Lord to speak.

We began the conference by playing some really fun ice breaker games.  These games helped the ladies to get to know each other as well as to get comfortable talking and sharing with one another.  In between each session we had time for fellowship and discussion of what we had learned.  After all the sessions were finished the first night We were led in after glow by one of the BCC team members, Athena, as well as Evelyn, our own worship leader from Arise.  As we shared through out the retreat there was a lot of laughing and quite a few tears shed.   I believe everyone left knowing the Lord was speaking to them.

Many of our ladies go to our church work every day in a local market.  They literally live day to day from what they earn each day selling fruits and vegetables or tailoring.  For that reason they could not attend the retreat.  We did not want them to miss out on receiving some great teaching and fellowship so we planned a one day women’s conference / women’s tea for them at our church in Kampala. The theme of this one day conference was “A Daily Walk With Jesus”.

Since many of the ladies from the market do not speak English we had Usher, one of the girls from our worship team, translate for them.  The topic was exactly what these ladies needed.  Their lives are so busy that they often think there is no time for Jesus except Sunday morning.  They felt encouraged to hear and be reminded that Jesus was with them all them time, even in the market and even when they are so busy.  The craziest and best part of the tea was that we guessed that about 25 ladies would come, planned for 30 just in case and 41 ladies showed up.  The ladies who came from my Tuesday Bible study, who do not attend our church, were overwhelmed by the attendance as well as the motivated about reaching out to areas such as the market where women are not so easily reached.  They have since approached me about doing some type of outreach to these ladies and hosting a day at our church where they can love on them and minister them practically and spiritually.  I know the market ladies were blessed by the day but I was equally blessed by their attendance and to see the heart of my weekly Bible study.

The BCC team hosted Evangelism training

The BCC team also hosted a 2 part Evangelism training for the church.  They met first for a couple of hours of training and prayer and then they went out to the market and put into practice what they were learning.  The men went and met with the market guys who normally gather on Thursdays for teaching and the women went to meet with the women’s study that meets in the market.  After meeting with the regulars they spent time just walking around the market and sharing as they felt led.  We have a quite a few visitors show up at church since then.  We pray God’s word keeps going out, that many will get saved and that they will come for discipleship.

PRAYER REQUESTS

  • Praise the Lord for everyone who gave toward the women’ retreat and that many women were able to come who could not have otherwise.

  • Pray for those who heard the gospel thru the outreaches, that they will give their lives to Christ and continue in discipleship.

  • Pray for the women’s hearts to remain stirred to develop their relationships with Christ as well as to reach out to others.

  • Pray for fruit from the outreach our church has to Northeastern Uganda. The people there are among the least reached people in Uganda.

  • Pray for Brian and Jill as recently they were hit by a drunk driver, severely damaging their car.  We are thankful no one was seriously hurt.

  • Continue to Pray that we would truly “Arise and Shine” the light of Christ in this dark place.

  • Pray for Brian as pastors and leads our ministry team at Arise Christian Fellowship. Pray for all the ministries and leaders.

  • Please prayerfully consider becoming part of the Kanyike Family support team.
