February Update
What a whirlwind couple of weeks it has been. The final count is forty-one students this semester. The first week we got back we were getting everything ready and then we had Orientation week.
Our theme this semester is Run With Endurance from Hebrews 12:1. We had a local pastor as the keynote speaker during Orientation Week and he gave us six tips for running the race that is set before us. I never thought about how God has a special race that we each must run. You cannot run my race for me and I cannot run your race for you but we are all called to run with endurance or patience. I took notes so Pilar suggested that I share the six points with you.
Here they are: 1: Look back and look around you – we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. When we look at those who have gone before us and those we know who are in the race with us we can find encouragement from them as they cheer us on. 2. You might have to let some things go – lay aside every weight and the sin that easily ensnares you. 3. Run with determination – the race has been set before us by God and we should determine to finish well. 4. Keep your eyes on Jesus – He’s the author and finisher of our faith. Take your eyes off of Him and you can get distracted and even go off course in the race. 5. Don’t get discouraged when God is correcting you. He wants to get you back on course in the race you are running. Verse 6 says for whom the Lord loves He chastens and scourges. That is how He corrects us when we go astray. 6. It’s time to get up and get back in the race if you’ve gotten discouraged or may have dropped out.
We were encouraged by his tips and hope you will be too.
When we got back from our Florida trip there was a big surprise for us . We had heard there was a fire on Christmas Eve and even saw a few pictures online. We found, living here in the dessert, that fires are not that uncommon. We have seen several fires over the years but none really close to the Bible College. It was amazing to see how much property burned in that fire. Even more amazing was where it burned. It did come on the Bible College Campus but just around the edges. Some of the staff here told us of how they prayed and the fire just stopped burning in some of the areas. What a testimony and blessing that none of our buildings were harmed at all. It has rained a couple of times since the fire and things are already turning green again.
I wanted to get this newsletter out early because we have an urgent need for prayer at the Bible College. Though we have been blessed with no Covid related illnesses on campus until now, this week several of our students and staff have had symptoms and have tested positive for the virus. Most of the cases seem to be mild and we are praying for God’s help and healing during this time. We have quarantined all the students on campus and we are working from home. I’m thankful for technology that allowed me to teach two classes this morning.
All this in the midst of some of the most exciting times that we have ahead for us that I’ll share with you next month.

Happy Thanksgiving from Leo and Pilar
What a great year it has been this year so far. We have seen God move in the lives of our students and the staff here in Ensenada. With Thanks giving coming up this week we are reminded of all the wonderful things we wouldn’t have if it weren’t for God’s grace and His love for us.
Things like family and friends who love and care and pray for us. We wouldn’t be serving here without their sacrifice and help for us. We feel and know that they are partnering with us and that brings a sense of accountability to all that we are doing. The victories, the increase, the ministry opportunities, and the times we get to share with others is all because of that partnership.
Paul says in Romans 10:13 -15 “For whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. How then shall they call upon Him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” So we are all working together for the sake of the Gospel.
It is encouraging for us as two of the married couples who graduated are planning to go to other countries as missionaries. One couple to Nicaragua and the other to Spain. We are sent and now we are sending others. Both of the couples are a tremendous testimony of how God changes lives and the effect of His word on the lives of their families.
Though it has been a great year in a lot of ways it has been a really hard year too. There have been a lot of low times for us. Times when we really had to seek the Lord and beg for His help. God has been faithful in answering some of our most desperate prayers and we are so thankful for that and we are learning to trust Him for those He has not answered yet. We continue to learn that He is in control and that we can trust Him completely.
There are so many other things to be thankful for but time and space aren’t enough to be able to list them all.
We only have two weeks left after Thanksgiving week until Graduation. Please pray for the four students graduating this semester. We are confident that God will use them as they go back home to Mexico, the US, and back to Canada.
Please continue to pray for us here. God continues to teach us, and mold us, and gives us a lot of opportunities to serve Him.

July / August News
Psalm 92:13-15 “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in their old age. They shall be fresh and flourishing. To declare that the Lord is upright: He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” NKJV
Once In a while I read a verse that just resonates with my soul and gives me such great inspiration and encouragement. These verses in Psalm 92 are like that. I feel like I was planted early in the house of the Lord, thanks to my parents, their families and friends. He has shown me much grace and favor. I am so thankful for that. My 60th birthday is this month so I really am identifying here with the concept of bearing fruit in my old age. I don’t feel like I’m sixty yet and still try to stay active and busy. I am thankful for good health. I will declare that the Lord is good, holy, and He is my rock – the one I cling to, and I put my faith and trust in Him.
If I want to see what we have been doing lately I just look on Pilar’s camera. She never downloads or deletes the pictures – I usually do that for her – so there’s a good chance there will be a pretty good record of what we’ve been up to. Her camera has pictures from this summer. When I looked here’s what I saw. There have been a lot of teams visiting and helping us this summer. We had to change our plans for finishing a team house that was started because a bridge for a highway is going right over the top of it. The Government will be buying the right of way for a highway that crosses the back end of the school property. So instead of continuing 
to build there, only to have to tear it down later, we started on a new dormitory. We have the concrete poured and we are ready to start framing the walls. It has been nothing short of amazing to see God provide the funds and the labor for that building. We still need about $80.000 to finish it and I look forward to seeing how that all happens. When it’s completed we will have at least thirty two more beds for students, some office space, and an additional large classroom. In the future it will be eight apartments, four one bedroom and four with two bedrooms for married staff and students.
The women’s study that Pilar leads is taking a summer break but there are pictures of her last meeting. They were praying for one of the ladies who was returning to the U.S. From the pictures you can tell they have a really good time of fellowship and spending time in God’s word together. I can also verify that they eat really good snacks too because sometimes there are leftovers.
We have combined our Thursday night Bible studies and are studying Revelation. I’m glad I sat in on that class two semesters ago. It would have been tough without that class. I guess the Lord knows what’s next before we do. I think that’s the whole point of Revelation – He knows even when we don’t.
Pictures from surf school this summer are exciting too. There is a whole new group of people showing up on
Saturday morning for Bible study and a surf session. We miss a lot of the old crew but many have moved away or have taken up new interests. They do come by some Saturdays and say hi so that’s an encouragement to us.
If you’d like to know how to pray for us we do have a couple of requests this month. Pray for our family as we are having to deal with some tough situations with our boys. We know God is in control and will work everything out for His glory but the process of getting there is sometimes hard for us to bear. It has also been a hard year financially for us. Mexico just enacted a 16% tax on everything so prices are going up and as our vehicles age they need more costly maintenance and repairs. We don’t complain but trust Him to provide and He has always been faithful. We also have some medical and dental needs that we have been putting off for lack of funds.
The latest pictures on Pilar’s camera have been of a new friend she has adopted. His name is Diego and he and three of his sisters were dropped off at Casa Horizonte – the special needs home for kids that is on the Bible College property. I was giving a tour of the home for a youth group and he followed us back to the college. We brought him home with us and I was able to find homes for his three sisters. They are some kind of lab mix dogs. Now that he’s all cleaned up he looks like a picture from an LL Bean catalog. This is our first dog since moving to Mexico so we are having to make some adjustments. He’s only two months old and likes to chew on everything.

May / June News
It’s hard to believe another semester is already over. We had a great group of students who worked hard, served with joy, and grew a lot. Our theme this semester was from 1Corinthians 6:20 that says “You were bought with a price.” It was posted in big letters on the wall of the chapel and was a reminder everyday of what our Savior has done for us.
We had ten students who graduated on May 23. It was quite the big event with over 200 family and friends attending to celebrate and participate in the ceremony. We seem to be growing everywhere each semester and see God using the students in great ways to share what they are learning. As we reflect on these students lives and see how God has been working in them, we are excited for their futures. Some are planning to go into ministry and the rest into different careers and jobs.
We attended a wedding just a week after graduation for two of our graduates from last year. It was outside in a lemon grove and just really pretty. This was our second wedding this year of our former students. The two couples are in this picture and are great friends – almost like brothers and sisters.

ico is to be a place where believers are rooted in God’s Word and raised up by Him to reach the world for Christ. Amazingly enough the newly weds are planning to move to Spain as missionaries in January and the other couple will be going to Nicaragua as missionaries at the same time. We are so proud of them and encouraged to see our students wanting to serve the Lord in foreign countries. Please pray for them as they make plans to go to share the good news.
This summer will be busy with teams coming to help move us forward at the College. We have plans to build the last dormitory on the lower campus that will allow us to house around 100 students and staff on campus. It really is amazing to see all that God is doing here in Mexico.

April News
March certainly brought Spring to Ensenada this year. The campus and the surrounding area is blossoming all over. I have to admit Spring is my favorite time of year and I really like seeing the flowers bloom. The cold of winter starts fading as the days get warmer and the newness of the plants growing and blooming gives hope. This year I have been reading a book of sermons on Easter. I am really looking forward to it this year. That’s what all these flowers and blooming trees remind me of – the Resurrection.
School is going well with only seven weeks left we are staring to plan for Spring break in a couple of weeks and then the Graduation of eight of our students in May. It has been a great semester so far. We see the students growing and maturing in their faith and walk with the Lord. As they give testimony to what God is doing in their lives it encourages us and keeps us humble. That God would allow us to be a part of such a great ministry is still amazing to us.
Our Bible studies are going well. We really enjoy the fellowship and times learning together from God’s word with other missionaries here in Baja Mexico. God’s word continues to stretch and challenge us here as we serve together to reach the city of Ensenada and the Mexican people in different kinds of ministries. Knowing it’s the Gospel and then discipleship that changes lives and hearts makes it meaningful as we meet together. Most of us are planning and gearing up for teams this summer. We are always praying for laborers to come alongside and help us in His work here.
Weekends are busy with surf school, church, and trying to put a few miles on my bike. There’s a fifty mile ride from Rosarito to Ensenada that I am training for the first weekend in May. It is a lot of fun with several thousand people riding in it. I’ll be turning sixty years old later this year so I don’t know how many more fifty mile rides I have left.
We have been working on visas since before Christmas and are starting to get near the end of the process. We are applying for the religious workers visa. Please pray that we will be accepted so that we can continue in the ministries we are doing here. We have had some setbacks, delays, and frustrations because the laws have changed and the exact process is not clear to us. We would just like to see it finished.

We find ourselves looking at March already this year. Where does the time go? We spent three weeks in Florida and Texas i
n January. It was so good to spend time with family and friends and to attend a couple of conferences. One was for Thrift Stores in Texas and the other was a Pastor’s Conference in South Florida where we were able to represent the Bible College. The Spring Semester started the day after we got back to Ensenada and it has been a whirlwind since.
Omar, one of the young men we knew from Surf School, was killed in a wreck on his motorcycle in February. That was really hard for both Pilar and me. He was only twenty one years old. He was such a nice guy too, everyone’s friend. He loved life, loved to surf, loved his family, and most of all loved Jesus. He was a real positive influence at the surf ministry – he always helped setting up and putting stuff away. He would be the one to volunteer to pray or comment on the Bible Study and how it impacted his life. It was so nice to be a part of the paddle out – that’s what surfers do as a memorial to those who pass away – and get to speak a few words on his behalf. Everyone spoke of his faith and his good natured outlook on life. Omar’s dad was led to accept Christ as his Savior that day too. What a blessing but it has been a sad time for us and we will miss him.
We have another great semester happening this spring. Our theme is, “Bought with a price”, from 1Corinthians 6:20. There is a sense of excitement and expectation to see God move in our lives. The student prayer times and the worship times together are so amazing. My Discipleship class and the Thursday night Bible Study I teach are going well. Pilar’s Tuesday morning and Thursday night Bible Studies are always encouraging to hear about too. We so appreciate all your prayers for us. At times it is a battle but God encourages us along the way with just the right amount of grace that we need.
We were privileged this weekend to be a part of the wedding ceremony of two of our Bible College Graduates – Lalo and Linda. One of the traditions here, along with a lasso and giving of family gifts during the ceremony, is to have a Bible presented to the couple. They chose us to present it. It was such an honor as both of them were in the class I teach. Upon presentation of the Bible the pastor encourages them to read it and keep Christ central to their marriage and life together. Lalo is attending a church planting class and Linda has always wanted to be a missionary. Pray for them that God would just really bless them.

October News
We left Florida on October 1 four years ago. Though we miss being close to family and friends, all we can say is that God has been faithful and that He is good. Thanks so much for your prayers and support.
We’ve been here long enough now to see students graduate and get married who didn’t know each other before they came to the college. I think there have been six or seven already. We get to see them when they meet and start liking each other. The tradition at the school is that they walk around the soccer field and talk and get to know each other, usually after lunch. That’s the sign that something is going on. Then a couple of years later we get invited to a wedding and get to witness them saying their vows. The weddings are so different here. It usually starts at 3:00pm, we don’t leave until 10:00pm, and it’s not usually over then, we’re just tired and ready to go home.
We went on a weekend ministry trip with twenty seven of the students to Tijuana. What a great time it was. We spent the night at two of the students parents house. It was a good time Friday night with food, singing praise songs, worshiping, and praying. Most of the team was up late talking and spending time with each other. We worked at the Calvary Chapel 
Tijuana in the morning. There was a lot of cleaning, painting, and other work to do both inside and outside the church. I helped cleanup outside and painted stripes in the parking lot. Tijuana is a big city of 2 million people and the church is located right across the border from the US. It’s in a very rough part of town. We found several discarded needles from drug users as we were sweeping and cleaning outside. Pilar helped serve lunch at the women’s Bible study that was meeting that morning. It was neat because she had let the pastors wife borrow a Beth Moore study on James she had used in the past and they were using that material for the study.
Saturday afternoon the College students planned an outreach with a church that the Tijuana church started in Pedregales. It is in one of th
e neighborhoods in Tijuana. There was a time of worship, Bible teaching and several of the students gave their testimonies. It was such a blessing seeing them
share and use the gifts they have with others.
As we were driving in to the church we could see the San Diego skyline off in the distance. It was such a contrast, the two places were so close and yet so different in so many ways. Like two different worlds -culture, language, countries that are just so different. It made me appreciate all the more how God has created us all so different and yet He loves each of us the same.

Dear Friends,
We had such a wonderful, busy, exciting, hard, and rewarding summer. M
ore than thirteen teams from all over joined us to help move the Bible College towards reaching our need for more housing for students. They came from Hawaii, Florida, Canada, California, Oregon, and Washington state. It was great to see so many coming back and we met a lot of new friends. I believe it was one of our best summers we have spent here in Mexico.
I heard Pilar say several times that it is so incredible how impressive the Body of Christ really is. People from such different backgrounds, walks of life, with different gifts and abilities who come alongside us to help see the vision for the Bible College just come to life. She just has the most incredible perspective on how it all works. What a blessing she was to all who came. We continue to pray that God will touch the hearts of those who came and call them into a closer walk with Him that involves serving others.
New Staff Houses
It seemed that as one team left another came in. There was only one really bad scheduling glitch where I had 100 people on campus for one night. The last group that came though was so gracious and slept on the floor for the night and never complained. When the last team checked out on August16 the students started arriving that day for Orientation Week.
This semester our theme is “Complete in Him” from Colossians 2:10. We have forty students and ten staff members living on campus. Twenty two of the students are new so I have been working on remembering all their names. They a great group. Every semester the first week of school just seems to have a lot of problems that come up. This semester our well is almost dry and not pumping near enough water. We have been adding a new tank and getting it hooked up so we can have water trucked in. Most of the wells in our
area are experiencing the same thing and is pretty common for living in a dessert. It seems kind of strange to this Florida boy not to see rain for months at a time and to have the well run dry.
This week we both start new studies with our Bible Study groups. Please pray for us as we lead them and that those who come will experience God’s grace in whole new ways. There is also the Mexican National Surf Championships in Rosarito this week. We are planning an evangelism outreach on Saturday after surf school. Our prayer is that we will be a light there and that God will bless our efforts as we witness for Him.

July News
We have been so blessed with Teams this summer. They started coming to help the weekend of Graduation and have continued through the month of June. They have all come to help and serve alongside us here. We always pray for workers and God has blessed us abundantly this summer. Not only do we have more teams we also have more interns and staff helpers this year.
If you saw the Summer Projects video from last month we are well on our way with the projects this year. The loft houses are almost done, the electrical and sewer for that project and the RV Park are almost done, the worst of the road potholes were filled, many hours have been spent helping at the Special needs Home – Casa Horizonte and three other ministries in Ensenada, our carpets got cleaned, and the floor is alm
ost ready to be poured for the Masada addition. With God’s help and willing workers it has already been an incredible summer.
I am reminded of the song that says “Give Thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because of what the Lord has done for us. ” We are so thankful and have been impressed that with the body of Christ we have so many friends now. People have come from Florida, Hawaii, Washington, and California to help us to be a place for believers to be rooted in God’s Word and sent out by Him to reach the 
world for Christ.
Now for some family news: this just in Bryan and CJ are expecting a boy. Alex continues to serve with us at the Bible College doing pictures, videos, and IT stuff. Ollie was one of the top salesmen in his area for Lowes. Jacob and Elliott are still in Pensacola working hard and having fun. Pray for us because we miss seeing them and our other family members.
We so appreciate your prayers and support for our ministry here. We are seeing fruit in the lives of the students and others we have been working with. We know that we are just a small part of what God is doing in their lives pray that He gets all the glory for what He is doing.

June News
Another semester gone by already!
Last month we graduated twelve more students from Calvary Chapel Bible College Mexico. We watched them grow and blossom over the past two years and now they are gone. I don’t know if we will ever get used to the coming and goings of so many. Though we would like to keep them around longer we know what great plans God has for them. Occasionally we get an email from those who have graduated and it is so encouraging to see what God is doing. Missionaries, Pastors, Youth pastors, Christian school teachers, Special needs children’s workers, are a few of the ministries they are doing. We continue to pray that God will send them out as laborers in His great harvest field.
Our family at Casa Horizonte, the special needs home that is on the college property, is growing too. Four children are receiving twenty four hour a day care from the staff there. It is encouraging to watch them grow and learn to communicate. There is just a sweet and kind feeling that is almost overwhelming there. It’s not always quiet and peaceful but it is quite something else to witness.
Summer is here and we are hosting a lot of teams this year. One team came already and helped us with graduation! What a blessing. For us it is such an encouragement that so many come to help us with the campus and building projects we are doing. We do have a lot to do and are looking forward to completing some of the things we have been planning.
It’s not all work here, though sometimes it seems that way. This last weekend we went camping with about fifteen other people to watch the Baja 500 race. We found a great spot right on the beach close to the race route and just enjoyed ourselves. It was about an hour south of Ensenada outside a little town called Irendira. It was really remote but there were lots of other campers along the route. I was amazed at how fast they drive on the bumpy old dirt road. It was in the dessert too so it was really dusty. The kids we took already want to plan another camp-out in November to watch the Baja 1000.
We so appreciate your prayers and support for our ministry here. We are seeing fruit in the lives of the students and others we have been working with. We know that we are just a small part of what God is doing in their lives pray that He gets all the glory for what He is doing.
