Greetings from Mexico,
In this update, I wanted to let you know about the mercy and compassion ministries that our church is involved in. The Bible tells us in Psalm 82:3- 4 that we as Christians are to… 3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. 4Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Since we moved here in 2002, God has called our church to be a beacon of help and hope and provision for the hungry and the needy in our community. To meet needs over the years, the mercy ministries in our church have focused on three main areas. #1- Our food and clothing ministry. #2- Our “Children’s Hunger Fund” outside of the church food ministry. #3- (and most important) Our church members showing mercy and helping out their fellow man. In the remainder of this update, I wanted to give you the details of these three vital mercy ministries.
Since our church opened its doors, we have had a food and clothing ministry. In this ministry, we will give any needy person food and clothing at any time, for any reason. All that anyone needs to do to receive help is to ask! (Picture: The house of a family that our mercy ministry team members have been visiting!)
This ministry is based on 1st Timothy 6:8 where we are told that “…with food and clothes we should be content.” The brutal truth in Mexico is that from time to time people don’t have the food and clothing that they need to survive. Because of that, this ministry was founded to help meet emergency needs.
Besides giving food and clothing out to those in need, this ministry also supplies a weekly meal for our Saturday kids club that picks up and ministers to local street children. We also have a benevolence fund taken out of the general church offerings that is available to help out in financial emergencies for those with pressing needs. The second mercy ministry in our church is a feeding ministry that focuses on feeding the hungry children and families that don’t go to our church. In this ministry, we partner with an amazing organization called children’s hunger fund. (Website: www.ChildrensHungerFund.org)
Each month our church is given 40 sealed boxes full of basic food staples that are designed to provide a family of four enough food to survive for a week. This ministries stated goal is to provide food to hungry families that are not Christians and meet them where they are at, out in the community. In this ministry, volunteers from our church take a box of food to a family in need, they pray for them, and then share the Gospel with them if the family is open to that. I would like to share with you one brief story of this ministry in action.
A couple of ladies from our congregation took a box of food to a single mom named Guadalupe. Guadalupe was not a Christian, had never been to our church, and was struggling with a 5 year old daughter while living in a shack. Guadalupe did work 60 hours a week in a local factory, but she earned less than 60 dollars per week. Week after week our team would show up and give Guadalupe and her daughter a box of food, and they would share and pray with her. Little by little Guadalupe opened up and she finally agreed to visit our church. While at the church Guadalupe accepted the Lord and she now faithfully attends church with her daughter and is walking with the Lord! Praise God! Our third (and most important)mercy ministry takes place as the members of our local church meet the needs the local community around them. The Bible teaches in Acts 20:35, that as Christians we… “…must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Our family has been blessed to be able to do this as the Lord has opened those doors. Just last week, Sarah and Daniel were able to travel with our friends from church (missionaries Robin and Carlos Oliveros of Spectrum ministries) to wash the feet and hair of the local Tijuana children that live in a dump! This was an amazing opportunity to practically show the mercy and love of Jesus to those in need. (Picture: Guadalupe and her daughter!)
Over the years, many mercy ministry missionaries have called our church their home. We are blessed to provide them with the spiritual nourishment and fellowship they need in order to help them fulfill the callings that God has put on their lives through their mercy ministries. If you would like to give a special one-time donation to any of these mercy ministries (mentioned above), please contact us and we would be happy to give your gift to that ministry. Finally, I would like to once again thank you for your partnership with our family and ministry. As you partner with our family and church, you are helping to meet the needs of the needy and hurting here in Mexico. As our Lord Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “Inasmuch as you did this unto the least of these… you did it unto me!” We could not do any of this ministry without your love, prayers, and financial support.
- Please pray that God would continue to provide the food and resources that we need to keep our mercy ministries going.
- Please pray that God would use our “Children’s Hunger Fund” ministry to continue to meet needs and open doors to share the Gospel.
- Because we recently lost two monthly supporters, please pray that God will raise up two new monthly supporters that are willing to partner financially with us!
