A Church Planting Vision Tour

Greetings from Mexico,

Our family hopes that you and yours had a blessed Christmas and a fun and restful New Year! Our first update of 2015 is going to focus on what I call a Church Planting Vision Tour. A church planting vision tour is a trip to a foreign city that has been identified as a possible destination for a future church plant. While visiting the city, a future church planter and the mentoring pastor (me) pray over the land, assess the spiritual condition of the city, and scout out possible locations for a future church plant. Over the years, I have had a number of opportunities to take church planting vision tours with our church planters, and I wanted to tell you about my most recent one.

In November, I traveled with my good friend Hugo Limon to visit his hometown of Culiacan Sinaloa for a church planting vision tour. Culiacan is the largest city of the Coastal Mexican state of Sinaloa. Unfortunately, the state of Sinaloa has become best known as the home of the violent Sinaloa drug cartel, but my visit there showed me that this state is full of potential and in dire need of the Gospel .

My friend Hugo was born and raised in the state capital of Culiacan and most of his family and friends still live there. But before I talk about our vision tour to Culiacan, I want to tell you a little bit about this amazing family.

Hugo, and his wife Brenda (along with their young daughter Joy) had many years serving together in the ministry before they started attending our church. From the moment that I met them, I knew that this was the kind of dynamic and gifted young couple that I would love to have serving by my side here in Rosarito forever.

But I have also learned that with this unique calling of church planting that God has given us, I often have these special people with me only for a short season. God brings them to me to train them up and then send them out to do what God has called them to do.

After attending our church for a short time, Hugo attended one of our church planting conferences and he then approached me about his desire to plant a church in his hometown of Culiacan. After talking with him, I recommended that Hugo enroll in our 1 year church planting program which he did, and he has excelled in this class.

Over that time, Hugo and I have become good friends, and after hearing so much about Culiacan we happily planned out a church planting vision tour together. In November, we were finally able to travel together to Culiacan to scout out the land. I enjoyed 3 amazing days there praying, seeking the Lord, (and eating J ) and getting to meet Hugo’s many family and friends that live there.

As we traveled around this historic city, I saw God’s calling on Hugo’s life and also the favor that he enjoys with the local people. So after much prayer and counsel, we are happy to announce that Hugo and his family are planning to move to Culiacan sometime in mid to late 2015 to plant their church. Please keep this wonderful family and their future church plant in your prayers.

Finally, I can’t finish up a letter without once again thanking you for partnering with our family. 2014 was a fruitful year for our family and ministry, and we couldn’t have done any of it without your love, prayers, and support. It is through your prayers that we are strengthened spiritually, and it is through your financial partnership that God provides for our needs. We are honored to serve as your missionaries.

Con mucho amor de Mexico, (with much love from Mexico)
